Adjei-Barwuah Science Academy For Girls (ABSAG)
ABSAG is the main project by the Bonsafo Barwuah Foundation. It is a science-oriented High School for girls with a curriculum emphasis on the sciences. In essence, ABSAG’s curriculum is to be predominantly STEM with the view to producing the scientists and medical personnel to support the development of Ghana.
Our Prime Objectives
To bring more females into Ghana’s scientific education cycle.
To expand the education offer in Ghana to promote the access of females who have traditionally not had sufficient access to the high school education curriculum, especially in the sciences.
To prioritize the access of rural learners into the sciences with the view to improving and expanding health and medical facilities into Ghana’s rural areas as part of a wider agenda for empowering rural female populations through enhanced health provision and improved socio-economic prospects.
To bring more capable females into Ghana’s socio-political environment to help enhance the prospects of a population that is growing proportionally more numerous. As a predominantly rural country, Ghana should benefit from such developmental programs.
The Curriculum Offer
The Sciences: Chemistry; Biology; Physics; Agricultural Science; Mathematics, Social Science, ICT.
Other Areas: English, French, Sports.
The Physical Plant
We do have a campus with a total area of 64.8 acres. It is largely undeveloped but we do have some reasonably good physical plant on it. We do have a three-storey block of 14 classrooms with space for a temporary library. The classrooms are large enough for some to be converted into since laboratories. We also have a workshop block that can be equipped for courses in plumbing, carpentry, painting and decorating as well as masonry.
The main classroom block needs some repairs and upgrading with the necessary teaching and learning equipment including a language laboratory and facilities for teaching sign language.
Welfare & Non-curricula Facilities
Out-door facilities and or field house for track, tennis, volleyball, field hockey and soccer.
Equipment and facilities for agricultural training programs in pig, rabbit, snail and vegetable farming
Programming
It is expected that all the developmental issues listed would have been completed by August 2022 and the doors of the school open in September 2022. Student recruitment shall be in early June 2022 while staff recruitment and training/orientation also start in May2022. Classes then start in mid-September, 2022.
Funding
To enable the opening of the school and admittance of the initial enrolment, we need some two million US dollars to be spent on:
- Physical plant improvements, campus clearance, access and security, dormitory equipment and ancillary equipment and facilities.
- Staff recruitment and training
- Staff emoluments and welfare
- Student facilitation and welfare
- Vehicles and agricultural equipment
- Student fee support
Administration & Management
The school shall be non-profit but we expect some fee support from public funding. Besides there will be some means-testing for students to ascertain individual students’ level of need for financial support.
Professor Adjei-Barwuah shall serve as the initial Head of the school and also the Chair of the Governors. This is to help see the school through any difficulties and also stabilize the character and ethics of the school.
